Ataulfen inhabit the Palereach
Inhabiting the lower lands of the Palereach, these opportunistic omnivores move in small packs of 3 to 5. Scavenging flora and carcasses. But will occasionally hunt small prey. Though a hunt is a rare event for the ataulfen. Given how small and generally weak they are, paired with their horrible eyesight. The lace of the araulfen is water resistant, allowing them to comfortably weather the constant sprinkle of rain the palereach gets. Long red feelers detect both coming storms and act as further camouflage.
Flighty, cowardly, and yet curious all the same. They often employ probing tactics when approaching unknown sights, smells, and sounds. Taking turns to inspect the current target of their attention. Should it prove dangerous the group will scatter, should it prove weak they may attack. But should it prove neither or both, they may linger long. Perhaps try to engage in playful behavior. But these attentions are oft fleeting and fragile.
Ataulfen give birth to 1-2 rather rotund young, of which are buried in the dirt. The whelps are comatose in this stage and can last anywhere from fifteen to forty days. Adults do not raise their young and instead depart soon after the young are buried. And thus the whelps learn to raise themselves. Often wandering alone until they find a group of which to merge with. Wether it is comprised of adults or other younglings doesn’t matter. Space is their only concern. The groups the young join will serve as their only community, their mates, and family.
