Gargatoria

Overview

The beast is a stark red, say for the goldenish horns and pale mane. Eyes blue and stark. Hooves a deep red. The beasts flesh is a striking yellow under all that red, organs included. This yellow comes from immense sulfur quantities in the Gargatoria’s body. This sulfur acts as a filter for the toxic mist and gasses that float around its habitat. Often, Gargatoria will act injured to lure other predators into the mist. Weakening them so their partner, Nkyion-ka, can hunt. And in turn the Nkyion-ka leaves them well alone. A symbiotic relationship.

The beasts are sought after for all manner of things by citizens, explorers, and the Skroll. From meat to filters. Commonly found in open spaces lounging and grazing. And when they go to hunt, they move to safer spaces. Appearing lazy to entrance prey to follow. After they catch the attention of much bigger predators they retreat into places thick with mist. Wearing down their stamina and resolve. Before their second half comes swooping in to kill. The Nkyion-ka is never too far from the Gargatoria. And after the prey is dispatched and the Nkyion-ka takes its leave. The Gargatoria feed on what remains.

Temperment

Gargatoria make splendid mounts and friends. The Skroll have throughout the years bred servility into their ranks. Gardening them to perform servitude whenever and however. If a straggler finds themselves alone and lost- it's in their best interest to seek out a Gargatoria. Who now thanks to the Skroll, has a biological imprint of basic commands. They can be trained further with ease. In the absence of a master they remain lazy and soft. Lounging when not engaged in activity. Their relative ease is thanks to the Nkyion-ka, who is never very far away.

Life Cycle

The foals of the Gargatoria are a pale yellowish brown. Typically only born in groups of one or two which are guarded and protected fiercely. The lack of red upon them deprives them of their natural sunscreen and passive energy intake from the suns. They are fed the majority of any leftovers from hunts and keep in shadowed dens. The den of a Gargatoria is more akin to a grave than a den. A simple box of which foals are deposited into and locked away with a thick hatch formed of mud, spit, and thatch. Unable to properly filter the toxic gasses that flow over Malia. The den keeps the worst of the gasses out of their little bodies.
When the red finally develops on their bodies they will be roughly a few months old. Watched closely they are allowed to explore outside the den. And kept away from the nearby Nkyion-ka. Who would fail to recognize the foals and eat them without a second thought. From here they are raised to maturity. Gaining privileges as they grow. And once they reach maturity, in the sake of genetic diversity they are driven from their homes. Forced into exile and to find another herd of which to live amongst.
