Rhekkal inhabit Anasgasi
The five stanza racer is a thing to be feared in Anasgasi. It races alongside its
quarry without fear, ramming headfirst into them to kill with its pointed head.
The Red Racer Rhekkal is revered in some Shi cultures as a turner of The Wheel.
As it waits for no one, spares no one, and always is moving forward without apology.
Shi ranchers both fear and revere Rhekkal for as wild ones prey on their flock, so do
tamed ones protect with their lives. As racers tend to not get into fights, the mere
presence of tamed Rhekkal fend off wild ones.
Rhekkal tend to be solitary, they bask in the light of the day. Feeding off the
harsh suns rays. Lazying about til nightfall, that is when Rhekkal come alive and
begin their search of prey. Racing around their territory in search of Pale to
cripple in hit and runs (Or to finish off once one is properly marked), or Tweso
of which to relentlessly attack in order to fell. Targeting their flippers in
order to go for the topple, shredding their fins in continuous attacks. And
always are they on the hunt for dragomii, who are but easy targets for Rhekkal
unless they are up in the trees. But out on the plains? They shall be overtaken.
Rhekkal are unique in their ability to be properly tamed by ranchers and other eccentric individuals. The Rhekkal when repeatedly presented with a chained down animal, will begin to not react with violence upon seeing the one who chained down a meal for them. And it is in this stage, that one can handfeed Rhekkal and form a bond with the animal. For it will then know this is a source of free food, that they need not race so hard, not for food at least.
Rhekkal are proud beasts, smart beasts. They do not mate for life and instead take the most physically fit partner they can find in breeding season (fall). When breeding season starts, Rhekkal will gather in droves in the clear plains of Anasgasi. The fittest of the fit race against each other, gradually forming cliques of Rhekkal in different physical states. The strongest will pair with the strongest, the fastest with the fastest. And all others? Either ousted if they are in particularly poor shape, or relegated to mediocre breeding pools. Through social and physical selection Rhekkal continuously improve over the years. Pups are had at the tail end of winter. Defenseless and underdeveloped, yet, with hooked limbs they will ascend the trees. Hiding out in the branches high up to feed on the sun as they are young. Yet they face the danger of being swarmed by Nbe Nbe. During summer, the pups will mature. Often are the sounds of breaking branches heard as their weight becomes too much for the flora to bear. This is the start of their race, the start of little legs and lithe bodies to endlessly pound the ground. The juvenile Rhekkal go after easy targets and scavenge what they can. Learning through solitary trial and error how to hunt.
