Verlam Wyrmwalker

Overview

This quiet beast moves in herds of 60-100. They don’t oft face predation- rather they are allowed to graze without incident. Afterall, they taste horrible and their hide is a lot of work to chew through. Often those ignorant of their taste are left retching at the foulness of their flesh. In some cases the meat of the Verlam causes severe illness if ingested. The hide of the Verlam may draw attention from hunters or contractors alike. That armored hide makes for perfect for barding or other armored dresses. They prefer to hunt small bugs and fish as they graze upon the meatier flora. Their choice of prey small Krislargen armored fish. Their tongue acts as a harpoon and is able to fit into small crevices and dens. They can also swing it around to gather smaller fly like insects. While the dangling flippers are used to swat away bloodsucking fauna and other bothersome pests. The repurposed headcage acts as a marker of health and can be used to similarly thwart pests. Two eyes look skyward and are darker as defense against the suns. The lower lighter and far more sensitive to the glittering scales/carapaces in the water and mud.

The herds of the Verlam keep the masses of insects from spreading en masse in the event of a megabloom of flora. Where their herds may triple in size as they swarm over the excess food. In their craze the Verlam can drive fish and other small animals from the marsh and to the surrounding woods and tundra. Causing a chain reaction of frenzy throughout the surrounding biospheres that ends in the death of many Verlam. Who in their frenzy drive the more sustaining prey out in favor of insects. Many fall to starvation, their bodies tempting back the same fish they terrified. The decay feeding the surrounding marsh and in a few years the corpses will bloom on-masse.

Temperment

Armored and left alone for the most part. The Verlam are docile unless repeatedly provoked. Herd animals they stay together and feed quietly. Other animals tend to try to use the Verlam as a way to hide. But if they draw active predators the Verlam will avoid the cowering prey or part to let the predators just take what they want. Smart enough to know they aren’t the target and nor do they want that kind of attention. Which makes them unreasonable stubborn animals only interested in their safety and the safety of their young.

Life Cycle

The young Verlam lay slumped upon their parents backs. Whelps that slumped upon the armored hide of their betters. Whatever makes the adult Verlam taste horrible makes the younglings taste so vile and sick they don't have to worry. For the most part. Should something like C'thathrat manage to come across the younglings, or something that lacks the ability to taste. Only then will they be within danger. Though it does take the rest of the Verlam a moment to react. They can lose several whelps before finally reacting with violence. Attempting to bludgeon the attacker to death, often holding down the invader. Shoving its face deep into the mud or water. Its a brutal affair and it is here that the whelps learn how to attack. Clumsily at least.
