Blackmane inhabit the Palereach
Blackmane Unicorn
Overview
The blackmane unicorn inhabits the deepest parts of the palereach. It is an apex predator and moves
mostly unseen. Solitary and rare the blackmane sticks mostly to its den and sleeps throughout the
year. The face is white, and its black mane fades to spotted white along the back. Its tail is longer
than average for a unicorn and black. Keeping it hidden among the pale grass and puffy black flowers
in its den. As the blackmane when asleep lays near comatose to conserve energy. Leaving them well
open to surprise attacks, hence their camouflage.
Blackmane when awake will leave their den to hunt. Creeping forward on all fours. And when the
flowers and grasses grow tall, the blackmane will stand on its hooved hind legs to look around.
When the blackmane finds prey it will stalk it silently. Following the animal to see if there is a
den nearby or if it will lead to larger prey. The sudden appearance of the blackmane with its piercing
red eyed stare is oft enough to startle prey into stillness for just a moment, before striking with
horn. Spearing its prey. It eats in the killspot before cleaning itself and slinking back to its den.
Temperment
The animal is quiet. And looks solely for a meal. The unicorns will ignore each other if they come across another one of their kind. But can conspire with one another to take down massive nomadic bloodpriest who may wander into the palereach. Displaying teamwork abilities. And its these teamwork abilities which turn dragomii to fools. Many try to tame the unicorn and many are eaten. Only a few have managed to snake their way onto the backs of the unicorns. One group specifically has managed to sequester away a breeding pair in order to create the new unicorn species of Blackfront Unicorn.
Life Cycle
The blackmane will take a partner whenever it has enough food to stay awake long enough to mate, and if another crosses its path. Leaving their numbers low. When about to mate, both will tussle for the roles of dominant and submissive. After mating, the submissive blackmane will gorge itself and go on a hunting frenzy. Slaughtering everything it can get its hands on and eating like mad before retreat to its den. Where it will lay comatose until birth. The whelps are small and mostly defenseless. And the blackmane will leave once to go back on its slaughter, bringing back enough prey to sustain it and the whelps for the months to come. As their horns grow in, they will be forced to be more independent. As it reaches an acceptable length and sharpness, the youngling will be kicked of the den and forced to find its own territory.
